Stock vs. Semi-Custom vs. Custom Cabinets: What's the Difference?
STOCK VS. SEMI-CUSTOM VS. CUSTOM CABINETS

You have probably noticed that cabinet prices vary a lot, even for kitchens that look similar at first glance. A big reason is how the cabinets are built. Cabinets generally fall into three categories: stock, semi-custom, and custom. Understanding the difference helps you set a realistic budget, avoid paying for features you do not need, and choose the right fit for your home.
Here is a plain-English breakdown from our showroom in Hollywood, MD, so you know what to expect before you start shopping.
What Are Stock Cabinets?
Stock cabinets are pre-built in standard sizes, usually in 3-inch increments, with a limited set of door styles and finishes. Because they are made in volume, they are the most budget-friendly option and often the quickest to get.
Good for: rental properties, laundry rooms and garages, quick refreshes, and kitchens with standard layouts and no odd corners or tight spaces.
Keep in mind: you have fewer choices in sizes, finishes, and storage add-ons. If your walls do not match standard cabinet widths, you may end up with filler strips to close the gaps.
What Are Semi-Custom Cabinets?
Semi-custom cabinets start from a manufacturer's standard designs, but you can modify them. You choose from a much wider range of door styles, wood species, paint and stain colors, and sizes, and you can add features like pull-out trays, spice racks, tray dividers, and specialty storage. They are built to order, so they take longer to arrive than stock.
Good for: most kitchen and bathroom remodels. It is the sweet spot for homeowners who want a custom-feeling kitchen without a fully custom price.
Keep in mind: you are customizing within the manufacturer's options. Unusual dimensions or one-of-a-kind designs may be outside what a line can do.
What Are Custom Cabinets?
Custom cabinets are built from scratch to your exact specifications. Every dimension, material, finish, and detail is designed for your space, which makes them the right choice when nothing off the shelf will do.
Good for: unusual layouts, sloped or angled walls, built-ins, historic homes, and projects where a very specific look or function is the priority.
Keep in mind: custom is the most expensive path and usually has the longest lead time, so it needs more planning and patience.

How to Decide Which Is Right for You
A few questions will usually point you in the right direction:
What is your budget? Cabinets are often one of the largest line items in a remodel. Decide what you are comfortable spending, then let the category follow.
How unusual is your space? A standard rectangular kitchen works well with stock or semi-custom. Odd angles, tall ceilings, or built-ins may call for custom.
How much do features matter? If you want pull-out pantries, appliance garages, or specific drawer organization, semi-custom or custom gives you more control.
What is your timeline? Stock is the fastest. Semi-custom and custom take longer, so plan ahead if you have a deadline.
Look Beyond the Label
The three categories are a useful starting point, but they are not a quality ranking. A well-built stock or semi-custom cabinet can outlast a poorly built custom one. Pay attention to the construction details: plywood vs. particleboard boxes, drawer box materials, soft-close hardware, door construction, and the warranty behind the product.
